6 Shower Upgrades For a Spa-Like Experience at Home

Get ready to take your shower from ordinary to spa sanctuary! You might be a bath person like Brittany and adore a luxurious freestanding tub. Or you might love yourself a great shower like John and JT. Whether your master bath remodel includes a separate shower and freestanding tub, or you’re forgoing the tub and maximizing all benefits of your shower, these are 6 shower upgrades that will give you a spa-like experience in your own home.

Steam Shower

Most of our clients include a steam shower in the renovation of their master bath. What’s not to love? You get all of the benefits of a steam room, without wrecking your water bill. Unlike a body sprayer, adding steam to your shower uses very little water.

A steam shower is designed to seal in moisture for a steam experience before, during, or after a shower. Digital controls inside the shower allow you to control temperature and duration. An adjustable vent is included in the shower enclosure to adjust for a regular shower versus steam use. A steam shower requires a generator to create the steam, so that is something to plan for. An adjacent closet or linen closet is a great place to locate the equipment needed.

Rain Shower Head

This is another upgrade we see in a lot of bathroom remodels. Water falls vertically, rather than at an angle, to mimic the sensation of showering under a waterfall or in the rain. Truly evoking the sensation of being on spa vacation, a rain shower head pairs really well with a hand held sprayer. Depending on the selected fixture, this can be mounted to the wall or ceiling. Consider an adjustable rain shower head so that it can be angled to avoid getting your head soaked on days you don’t want to wash your hair.

Body Sprayer

A body sprayer is another way to elevate the spa-like qualities of your shower. Some people love these, others find they don’t use it and prefer the steam element or hand held sprayer. For those who love the body sprayers it is because of the extra cleansing power and water pressure.

Consider the position of these carefully, for the heights of all users. To ensure you don’t run out of hot water too quickly it is important to make sure your water heater is capable of handling this added amenity. Another important note is that if you, or someone in your household, takes long showers expect your water bill to increase. Especially if that person prefers to use the body sprayer for the duration of the shower.

Hand Held Sprayer

The hand held sprayer pairs well with the rain shower head and can have multiple benefits. It is great for bathing a child or assisting in bathing an elderly person. It is also a great way to wet or wash your hair without having to get undressed for the shower. For example, those who use leave-in hair treatment products or a pre-shampoo mask.

Bench Seat

To sit or not to sit? We’ve heard it from both sides. Some love to sit in the shower, others don’t like the coldness of the tile. Regardless on your preference, a bench seat pairs really well with a steam shower. It also creates a good place to rest a foot when shaving! Lastly, we think it mentally gives you that luxurious feeling of being in a spa-like environment over an ordinary shower.

Tile Design

The tile selection is another way to elevate the shower experience, as well as the design of the whole bathroom. The options are endless! We love a monolithic bathroom that uses the same large tile across all the walls but we can appreciate small square or penny mosaic too. We could describe a million ways that tile can elevate the look of your bathroom but we recommend browsing the ever growing image collection on pinterest to get a feel for what’s right for you.
